Answer

The cups were used by patients at the Bath General Hospital for drinking measured doses of mineral water. They have graduated rings on the interior of their bowls for measuring 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 fluid ounces. There was a suggestion that they were used for blood letting but the shape of handles makes their use as drinking cups most likely. The marks on the bottom of the cups indicate they were made by Edgar and Son, pewterers of Edinburgh c1780-90. Two are on display at the Brownsword Therapy Centre, Combe Park, Bath.
