This instrument, known as a Martin Vigorimeter, consists of three rubber bulbs of graded sizes which can be attached to a pressure gauge. It was until recently used in the RNHRD physiotherapy department to measure grip strength.
Grip strength — the amount of force you have when you clench your hand around an object — is a useful indication of your overall health. It begins to decline around age 50. Physical fitness, especially muscle strength (grip strength), may increase health-related quality of life and is an important source of health in older age, suggesting that grip strength can be used as an indicator of health-related quality of life.
